Key Responsibilities of an NICU Nurse:

Patient Assessment and Care:

  • Conduct comprehensive nursing assessments of newborns, including physical examinations, vital sign monitoring, and assessment of developmental milestones.
  • Develop and implement individualized care plans based on each infant’s needs and medical conditions. Monitor vital signs (heart rate, respiratory rate, blood pressure, oxygen saturation) and other parameters, adjusting equipment and interventions as needed.
  • Provide hands-on care, including feeding (breast milk, formula, tube feeding), bathing, diapering, and other basic care activities.
  • Administer medications and treatments, including intravenous fluids, medications, and therapies.
  • Manage and maintain medical equipment, such as ventilators, incubators, and monitors, ensuring they are functioning correctly.


Collaboration and Communication:

  • Work collaboratively with neonatologists, respiratory therapists, and other healthcare professionals to coordinate care and address patient needs.
  • Communicate effectively with parents and families, providing education, support, and guidance on infant care, feeding, and discharge planning.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed medical records, documenting patient observations, treatments, and responses.
  • Alert the medical team to any changes in a patient’s condition or any concerns regarding their well-being.


Safety and Infection Control:

  • Maintain a sterile and safe environment within the NICU to minimize the risk of infections and complications.
  • Follow strict infection control protocols and guidelines, including proper hand hygiene, sterilization of equipment, and isolation precautions.


Education and Support:

  • Educate parents and families on new born care, including feeding, hygiene, safety, and signs of illness.
  • Provide emotional support and counselling to parents and families dealing with the stress of a NICU stay.
  • Assist with discharge planning, ensuring that parents are adequately prepared to care for their baby at home.


Skills and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred, but may be flexible depending on experience.
  • Neonatal nursing experience, often with specialized certifications (e.g., CCRN-NICU or RNC-NICU).
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure and in a fast-paced environment.
  • Empathy, compassion, and a caring attitude towards newborns and their families.
  • Manual dexterity and the ability to handle small and delicate equipment.
  • Knowledge of neonatal physiology, pathology, and treatments.
